DHS News and Updates - 7 hours 22 min ago
Five New Counties Eligible for FEMA Disaster Assistance

AUSTIN, Texas – Homeowners and renters in Burnet, San Saba, Tom Green, Travis and Williamson counties are now eligible for FEMA disaster assistance after the severe storms, straight-line winds and flooding that began July 2.

FEMA and the State of Texas may be able to help with serious disaster-related needs, displacement, temporary lodging, basic home repair costs and personal property loss. Previously, Kerr County was designated for FEMA assistance, meaning survivors with losses in Kerr County could apply even if they do not live in the county or in Texas.

Survivors with homeowners’, renters and flood insurance are encouraged to file a claim with their insurance carrier as soon as possible. By law, FEMA cannot provide funding for losses covered by your insurance. If your policy does not cover all disaster expenses, you may be eligible for federal assistance.

There are several ways to apply.

The fastest way is to go to DisasterAssistance.gov. You may also use the FEMA App for mobile devices or call the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362. Lines are open daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. CT. If you use a relay service, captioned telephone or other service, you can give FEMA your number for that service. Helpline operators speak many languages. Press 2 for Spanish.

You may also visit a Disaster Recovery Center to receive in-person assistance. A recovery center is open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily at First Baptist Church, 625 Washington St., Kerrville, TX 78028. As more Disaster Recovery Centers open, you may find one closer to you by using your ZIP code to search FEMA.gov/DRC.

To view an accessible video on how to apply, visit: Three Ways to Register for FEMA Disaster Assistance - YouTube.

President Donald J. Trump Approves Emergency Declaration for New Mexico

DHS News and Updates - Thu, 07/10/2025 - 17:25
President Donald J. Trump Approves Emergency Declaration for New Mexico

WASHINGTON -- FEMA announced that federal disaster assistance is available to the state of New Mexico to supplement response efforts due to emergency conditions resulting from severe storms, flooding and landslides beginning on June 23, 2025, and continuing.

The President’s action authorizes FEMA to coordinate all federal disaster relief efforts to alleviate the hardship and suffering caused by the emergency on the local population and to provide appropriate assistance to save lives, to protect property, public health and safety and to lessen or avert the threat of a catastrophe.

The assistance is for Chaves, Lincoln, Otero and Valencia counties.

Specifically, FEMA is authorized to identify, mobilize and provide, at its discretion, equipment and resources necessary to alleviate the impacts of the emergency. Emergency protective measures, limited to direct federal assistance, under the public assistance program, will be provided at 75% federal funding.

José M. Gil Montañez has been named as the Federal Coordinating Officer for federal recovery operations in the affected area. Designations may be made at a later date if requested by the state and warranted by the results of further damage assessments.

Public Invited to Appeal or Comment on Flood Maps in Carroll County, New Hampshire

Preliminary flood risk information and updated Flood Insurance Rate Maps are available for review by residents and business owners in affected communities in Carroll County, New Hampshire. Residents and business owners are encouraged to review the latest information to learn about local flood risks and potential future flood insurance requirements.

The updated maps were produced in coordination with local, state and FEMA officials. Significant community review of the maps has already taken place. Before the maps become final, community stakeholders can raise questions or concerns about the information provided and participate in the 90-day appeal and comment periods.

The 90-day appeal and comment periods will begin on or around July 16, 2025. The affected communities in Carroll County, New Hampshire are listed in the Proposed Flood Hazard Determinations Notice in the Federal Register at the following website: https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2025/05/22/2025-09209/proposed-flood-hazard-determinations

Residents may submit an appeal if they think modeling or data used to create the map is technically or scientifically incorrect.

  • An appeal must include technical information, such as hydraulic or hydrologic data, to support the claim.
  • Appeals cannot be based on the effects of proposed projects or projects started after the study is in progress.
  • If property owners see incorrect information that does not change the flood hazard information — such as a missing or misspelled road name in the Special Flood Hazard Area or an incorrect corporate boundary — they can submit a written comment.

The next step in the mapping process is to resolve all comments and appeals. Once these are resolved, FEMA will notify communities of the effective date of the final maps.

To review the preliminary maps or submit appeals and comments, contact your local floodplain administrator (FPA). A FEMA Map Specialist can identify your community FPA. Specialists are available by telephone at 1-877-FEMA-MAP (1-877-336-2627) or by email at FEMA-FMIX@fema.dhs.gov.

FEMA Assistance May Be Available for Losses Not Covered by Insurance

DHS News and Updates - Thu, 07/10/2025 - 11:01
FEMA Assistance May Be Available for Losses Not Covered by Insurance

AUSTIN, Texas – If you sustained damage from the March 26-28 severe storms and flooding, and initially did not receive FEMA assistance because of insurance coverage, you may now be eligible. For residents in Cameron, Hidalgo, Starr and Willacy counties, if your insurance did not cover all damages or if your reimbursement is delayed, FEMA may be able to help.

While FEMA cannot duplicate insurance payments, it may be able to help where insurance did not. You may be eligible for FEMA Individual Assistance if you:

  • Were denied insurance benefits by your insurance company, or
  • Your insurance claim has been settled and you can demonstrate to FEMA that your settlement didn’t cover your disaster-related essential needs.

Survivors who apply with FEMA may be eligible for Housing Assistance and Other Needs Assistance (ONA).

Housing Assistance may include help with rentals, home repairs and home replacements. ONA may include help with personal property, medical expenses, dental expenses, funeral expenses, childcare, transportation, and other miscellaneous items.

The first step is to contact your insurance company to request one of the following documents:

  • A denial letter, or proof that you are not being covered by your insurance company.
  • A settlement letter, or exactly what is being covered by your insurance company.
  • A delay letter, or proof there has been no official decision yet by your insurance company on your insurance claim, and it has been more than 30 days from the time that you filed your insurance claim. Any funds that you may receive from FEMA in this process would then be considered an advance and must be repaid when you get your settlement.

FEMA Assistance May Be Available for Losses Not Covered by Insurance

FEMA assistance is based on the specific information provided on each FEMA application, including the documentation provided by the applicant.

You can submit your documentation of denial letters, settlement letters or letters of delay:

  • In person at a Disaster Recovery Center. To find a center close to you, go online to: DRC Locator, or text DRC along with your Zip Code to 43362 (Ex: DRC 78552).
  • Go to DisasterAssistance.gov;
  • Download the FEMA App for mobile devices;
  • Online at DisasterAssistance.gov.
  • By mail at:
    • FEMA – Individuals and Households Program National Processing Service Center
    • P.O. Box 10055
    • Hyattsville, MD 20782-7055
  • By fax at 800-827-8112, Attention: FEMA – Individuals and Households Program.

You can also speak with a FEMA specialist directly by calling the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362. If you use a video relay service, captioned telephone service, or other communication services, please provide FEMA the specific number assigned for that service. Lines are open daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. CDT, seven days a week.

Homeowners and renters who were displaced or have property damage from the March storms have until July 22, 2025, to apply for FEMA assistance.

FEMA Offers Equal Access to Assistance for all Tennessee Disaster Survivors

DHS News and Updates - Thu, 07/10/2025 - 08:46
FEMA Offers Equal Access to Assistance for all Tennessee Disaster Survivors

FEMA is committed to providing equal access to federal assistance for Tennesseans who were affected by the April 2-24 severe storms, straight-line winds, tornadoes and flooding. Anyone with an accessibility need who is applying for FEMA assistance should let FEMA know.

If you or anyone in your household has a disability or language need---as well as a need to interact with FEMA or have disability-related losses due to the storms, it is important to answer “yes” to the appropriate questions when completing the application for FEMA disaster assistance. You will be asked to identify what you need to help you throughout your recovery process. Questions will also help identify other services for which you may be eligible to receive reimbursement.

Examples of the type of questions you can expect include:

  • Do you have a disability or language need that requires an accommodation to interact with FEMA staff and/or access FEMA programs?
  • Do you or anyone in your household have a disability that affects your ability to perform activities of daily living or requires an assistive device?
  • Did you have any disability-related assistive devices or medically required equipment/supplies/support services damaged, destroyed, lost, or disrupted because of the disaster?

A disaster can take away the key components that enable people with disabilities and people with other access and functional needs to live independently or to communicate with others. These may include a wheelchair, scooter, walker, CPAP machine, hearing aids, eyeglasses, or screen reader. You may be eligible to receive FEMA funds to replace these items.

The First Step is to Apply

Go online to DisasterAssistance.gov, visit a Disaster Recovery Center, use the FEMA App or call the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362 to apply. The telephone line is open every day and help is available in most languages. If you use a relay service such as Video Relay Service, captioned telephone or other service, give FEMA your number for that service. The deadline to apply for assistance is Aug. 19

To view an accessible video on how to apply, visit Three Ways to Apply for FEMA Disaster Assistance - YouTube

When you apply for assistance, have the following information readily available:

  • Address of your disaster damaged home with zip code
  • A description of your disaster caused losses, which may include the condition of your damaged home
  • Insurance information, if available
  • Social Security number
  • Phone number where you can be contacted
  • Address where you can receive mail or email address to receive electronic notifications

If you need an accommodation or assistance due to a disability or language need, ask FEMA at the time of applying or anytime throughout the assistance process.

Love County, Oklahoma Flood Maps Become Final

DHS News and Updates - Wed, 07/09/2025 - 14:19
Love County, Oklahoma Flood Maps Become Final

DENTON, Texas – New flood maps have been finalized and will become effective on Jan. 9, 2026, for Love County, Oklahoma. During the next six months, a FEMA compliance specialist will work with the community to update each floodplain ordinance and adopt these new flood maps.

Residents are encouraged to examine the maps to determine if they are in a low-to-moderate or high-risk flood zone. The current and future Flood Insurance Rate Map can be viewed on FEMA’s Flood Map Changes Viewer at https://msc.fema.gov/fmcv.

By understanding flood risks, individuals can decide which insurance option is best for their situation. Community leaders can use these maps to make informed decisions about building standards and development that will make the community more resilient and lessen the impacts of a flooding event.

Anyone without flood insurance risks uninsured losses to their home, personal property and business. Flood insurance is available either through a private policy or through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) for those in communities who participate in the NFIP. Residents with federally backed mortgages must have flood insurance if their structures are in the Special Flood Hazard Area.

Contact your local floodplain administrator (FPA) to review the new flood maps and learn more about your risk of flooding. A FEMA Map Specialist can help identify your community FPA and answer questions about the maps as well. Contact them by phone or online chat.

There are cost-saving options available for those newly mapped into a high-risk flood zone. Learn more about your flood insurance options by talking with your insurance agent or visiting floodsmart.gov

FEMA Authorizes Funds to Fight Nenana Ridge Complex in Alaska

DHS News and Updates - Mon, 07/07/2025 - 15:24
FEMA Authorizes Funds to Fight Nenana Ridge Complex in Alaska

BOTHELL, Wash. -  The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) authorized the use of federal funds to help with firefighting costs for the Nenana Ridge Complex burning in the Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area and Fairbanks North Star Borough, Alaska.

The state of Alaska’s request for a declaration under FEMA’s Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG) program was approved by FEMA Region 10 Acting Administrator Vincent J. Maykovich on Saturday, July 5, 2025, at 10:11 p.m. PT. He determined that the Nenana Ridge Complex threatened to cause such destruction as would constitute a major disaster. This is the third FMAG declaration in 2025 to help fight Alaska wildfires.

At the time of the state’s request, the wildfires threatened homes near the communities of Nenana and Fairbanks. The fires also threatened communication towers, watershed, fishing streams, spawning sites, wildlife, environmental and cultural resources, commercial sites, and parts of the George Parks Highway, the Alaska Railroad, and the Alaska Energy Authority’s Alaska Intertie transmission line.

FMAGs make funding available to pay up to 75 percent of a state’s eligible firefighting costs for fires that threaten to become major disasters. Eligible items can include expenses for field camps, equipment use, materials, supplies and mobilization and demobilization activities attributed to fighting the fires. These grants do not provide assistance to individual home or business owners and do not cover other infrastructure damage caused by the fires.

  • To view an accessible video about how to apply visit: Three Ways to Register for FEMA Disaster Assistance - YouTube.
